Is is possible to write to a file local to the client using a java servlet?

No, it is not possible to write to a client side file from a Java Servlet. In order to do this, you would need to deploy a signed Applet. The Applet could communicate with the servlet, but it is the Applet that would take care of the writing to the local file.
