I need help to conquer this concept. I have an intranet with 35 end users. I want to have all the end users have separate mail id. I need guidance from scratch. What stuff do i need to download and then what are the following directions. thanks
This is a very wide question, and I don't really understand what you are asking. Are you looking for a mail server (hardware or software), some way of automatically allocating mail ids, some sort of user admin tool to use on an existing system, a service from an internet service provider, or what? Please give us a few more details about whatever system you have in place at the moment, what you would like the new system to do, and how you would like the new system to work. I'm sure we can help, if we know a little more about what you need.
I just have a static ip address and a computer with tomcat-apache running as a web server. And I have JDK 1.2 installed on it. Where do I start from. Thanks for the input

Well for a start you need a mail server for each protocol which you want to support. If you want your users to be able to collect mail using POP3 or IMAP, then you need a server to offer those protocols. If you want your users to be able to send mail using SMTP, then you need a server which offers that protocol. If you are running your Tomcat on a Linux or Unix system, then you probably have servers for these protocols available already. If you are running on a Windows system, a Mac, or some other oddity, then you will probably need to get and install servers for these protocols. Once you have servers in place, you will need a registered domain name, and some server to look after the DNS for that domain. If your system only connects occasionally, you will also need an ISP to hold mail for you while your system is offline. If you have a spare 486 or Pentium PC which you don't mind reformatting, I can strongly recommend the "e-smith" gateway, firewall, fileserver proxy and mail system. It's really easy to install and does pretty much all of what you need, only requiring an external ISP to handle DNS and hold mail when you are offline. I use it on one of my boxes here and it picks up mail from a single ISP POP box and distributes it as appropriate to all my users. The e-smith server then offers POP3, IMAP, SMTP and web-mail services, as well as acting as a ahared web server and file server accessible from your Unix, Linux, Windows and Mac clients. If you are setting up your intranet on linux,you could go for qmail,instead of sendmail,which you can get free on [ur]www.qmail.org[/url].It's free and downloadable.Reputed mailing service providers like usa.net,rediffmail etc. use qmail. It's extremely well documented too,so u won't have any trouble installing it and running it. For Windows platform,you can go for MS Exchange. For the web services....
