Is it possible to combine JSP and XSL to isolate the logic and the dispay?

Yes, easily. With Xalan, for example:

where instruments.xml is the input document and XSLTSample.xsl is the stylesheet. Chapter 16 of JSP: The Complete Reference shows an example of this.
