compiling bookstore from tutorial

Hello out there, anyone familiar with the bookstore example from the Sun servlet tutorial example? When I extract the zip file the class files are not there as expected as per the instructions. So, I am trying to compile them myself, but the import statements are not finding javax. Other .java code compiles fine from this directory. Any suggestions? Thank you.

I tried another example from another tutorial and get the same compile error: Package javax.servlet not found in import
So...I am using jdk1.1.7, maybe it is time to upgrade, but I am confused as the tutorial with this example came with this version of jdk. (I tried routing the path to javax, but I'm not sure it is correct site for package, I'm not sure exactly where the compiler gets the package infor - anyway, hasn't worked yet) I am able to run the other examples, I can't write any myself, though until I figure out this compiler problem.
