Tomcat Won't Shutdown in Unix

I am trying to run Tomcat on a Unix machine and when I run the script executes without erros but the Tomcat process is still there. The only way I can shutdown Tomcat is to lookup the process ID and then kill it.
The process I am refering to looks like this:
ashis 3947 1 0 13:22:53 pts/26 0:20 /pie/java2/bin/../bin/../bin/sparc/native_threads/java -Dtomcat.home=./.. org.a
