Since it's in the subject, check this flash puzzle:
http://smallcampus.net/html/maths_games/2001-05-03/riverIQGame.swf
The rules:
1. The mother will kill a boy if he's in the same side as her if the father isn't also.
2. The father will kill a girl if she's in the same side as him if the mother isn't also.
3. The prisoner wil kill anyone who is in the same side, except if the policeman is also there.
4. Only mother, father and policeman can drive the boat.
5. Boat capacity is 2.
Have fun!
5. Only 2 per boat.

An interesting twist. Murder by sexes definitely happens here. Tho' I can't say I think much of the parents kiiling off offspring of the opposite sex. What kind of example is that to set ?

Maybe the explanation is written there.
My Japanese is very basic, but I can give a try translating it.
I've been told it's a group dynamics activity when applying for jobs in Japan.

I don't think killing off offspring or propogating the idea is a good thing. Especially as the population in Japan is expected to drop by 21%. Enjoyed 3 goes at the game, though!

The policeman and the "weetle" children are the key to law and order.
I'd toss the rest into the river.They should have provided a catapault so that you could place it where you'd expect mother,father ,criminal to land on shore then catapault them into the river !

Let's assume everyone on side A of the river,
the goal is to move the family to side B of the river
one possible sequence for this puzzle would be :

not so smart guy still curious to learn new stuff every now and then

Correct!
But missing 2 steps, by my fault.
The prisoner is being scorted to jail, so he must be on the other side of the river as well.
Of course, he could easily escape the guard being on the other side alone, but blame it on the puzzle.

hi there,
didnt see the solution yet, but here is my answer:
Lets give name to everyone.
Mother : M
Father : F
Girl : g
Boy : b
Policeman : P
Prisnor : p
1. first F & s go to the other side
M,g , P , p ------------------> F , s
2. F comes back
M, g , P , p, F <-------------- s
3. M & F go together to the other side
g , P , p -----------> M , F , s
4. M comes back

M , g , P , p <--------------- F , s
5. P and p cross the river
M , g -------------> P , p , F , s
6. F comes back
M , g , F <--------------- P , p , s
7. M & F will go now
g ---------------- > P , p , s, M , F
8. M comes back

M , g <----------- P , p , F, s
9. and that was easy, M & g cross the river and everyone is through
--------> P , p , F, s , M , g
:-)

Er... that's a different puzzle Shailesh. There are 2 little girls and 2 little boys in the original. Follow the link in the first post.

My solution...

Of course, I also wonder why the prisoner doesn't just split when the cop is hanging out on the other side of the river...

Edit: I realize my solution is pretty much the same as Chi Lin's.

wrong tranlation but fun game.
