There are five elements with names that start with this letter but only four have symbols starting with this letter.
EIGHT states in the United States have names and postal abbreviations that begin with this letter . No state has more than one of this letter in its name.
THE world's largest neon sign is this giant letter on the Mississippi River Bridge in Memphis, Tennessee.
This letter is a title of a movie.
Which letter is it ?

Well, there's a movie called "M", and there are eight states that begin with the letter 'M' (along with their postal abbreviations). I also can't think of any state names that have more than one 'm' in it. I'm not a chemistry whiz so I couldn't name five elements that begin with 'm'even if you pointed a gun at my head, but as for the remaining clue, if there's one letter that makes up a giant sign on a bridge over the Mississippi in Memphis, then a giant "M" seems like a good candidate.

Ok -- so the 8 states are
MN - Minnesota
MI - Michigan
ME - Maine
MS - Mississippi
MT - Montana
MO - Missouri
MA - Massachusettes
MD - Maryland
5 elements that start with it...
Magnesium - Mg [12]
Manganese - Mn [25]
Molybdenum - Mo [42]
Meitnerium - Mt [109]
Mendelevium - Md [101]
but all 5 have symbols that start with it... so is M the right letter?
N is also a candidate for the 8 states, except that North Carolina has 2 N's -- so it breaks that rule...

Here is a brief description of meitnerium.
Standard state: presumably a solid at 298 K
Colour: unknown, but probably metallic and silvery white or grey in appearance
Classification: Metallic
Element 109, meitnerium, is a synthetic element that is not present in the environment at all. There is no dispute concerning the name meitnerium for element 109. The interested reader should consult the on-line version of The Wonderful World of Atoms and Nuclei for a fascinating insight into research on "super-heavy" atoms.
Isolation
Here is a brief summary of the isolation of meitnerium.
Only a few atoms of element 109, meitnerium, have ever been made. The first atoms were made through a nuclear reaction involving fusion of an isotope of bismuth, 209Bi, with one of iron, 58Fe.
209Bi + 58Fe 266Mt + 1n
Isolation of an observable quantity of meitnerium has never been achieved, and may well never be. This is because meitnerium decays very rapidly through the emission of a-particles.

I hadn't come across this one before. That would make it 6 elements with the letter 'M' including Mercury as Greg had it.You are all correct on the states beginning with 'M'.
I am curious as to what the neon sign 'M' stands for. MacDonalds ?
