Suppose I have a jsp page that uses a bean and I want to pass the request object to a function in my bean. What type is request? I need this to declare what type will be passed to my function in the bean

You can refer to request as a javax.servlet.HttpServletRequest object.
There is a nice syntax summary document in PDF form you can download from java.sun.com that has stuff like this.
