Inovke Servlet with No Response

Can I invoke a servlet using an HTTP POST without
the browser receiving a response and changing the
contents of the page?
I thought I read somewhere that POST could be used
this way whereas GET would always change the page.
I'm thinking of invoking the servlet from an HTML
form or from an applet on the page.
