Can someone tell me in laymans terms what Struts is and why i would want to use it? The same thing for WAF (Web Application Framework). There is a lot of abstract explanations out there. Just want the plain vanilla version please.
Thanks,
Steve

The so-called framework are provided either to provide utilities common in all web application(Tag library, form mechanism handling etc) or to enforce the RIGHT application design, or both of them. Struts fits into the last category.
Specifically, struts enforces LAYERED application design(DO NOT think it as equivalent of COMPONENT design. They coesist in struts, but are different thing)
JSP as only a layer for GUI rendering, Servlet for action handling(Handling all browser-side user clicks), and JavaBean used to handle data access and business logic.
Why should you use it? Good question. If you want to know where a particular user action is controlled and managed without browsing your own thousands lines of code...Use it.
If you want to build intelligent form with error reporting mechanism, use it.
My general opinion is that framework does not eliminate code you have to write. However, it keeps your mind and code clear.
