what are differences applets vs. Java application client in feel of user point view

I am thinking of using an applet to talk to a j2ee server or a java application client to talk to a j2ee server.
With java application client I will need less server calls since between swing pages we can cach some state variables, i.e. we can go from a Swing page to a Swing page.
With applets (embedded into html) instead of Java Swing application I am not sure what is difference in regard to the point above. What are differences in terms of the look and feel from the point of view of a user.
Please give me some clarifications.
