sending form data to smtp gateway

I have a form on a web page and I would like to build a servlet that will extract the data from the form and compose an email message containing the form data and fire it off to an SMTP gateway addresses to a specified email address. I've seen this done rather elaboratley with perl but not with servlets. I know enough about servlets to get the data extracted from the form but what is the easiest way to send it to the SMTP gateway? Thanks in advance for any assistance...
