I downloaded Tomcat4.0.3 and iam running under Win 98. I have set the environment variables and put that in autoexec.bat file set JAVA_HOME=C:\JDK1.4 set CATALINA_HOME=C:\Tomcat. set TOMCAT_HOME=C:\tomcat set classpath=%classpath%;c:\jdk1.4\lib\tools.jar So when I run the startup.bat file it opens one more dos window and immediately gets closed. Iam left with one dos window where it says C:\tomcat\bin>startup Using CATALINA_BASE: c:\tomcat Using CATALINA_HOME: c:\tomcat Using CATALINA_TMPDIR: c:\tomcat\temp Using JAVA_HOME: c:\jdk1.4 When i was using tomcat 3.0 it used to open a new dos window saying starting tomcat. I also tried on the browser http://localhost:8080/. It says page not responding. I have also increased the memory settings for DOS to 4096. Am i doing something wrong here?. Iam going nuts. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
Thanks Rene, It worked. No document says we need to do this. Once again thanks for your help.

Rene, While trying to shut down it kind of refused saying Catalina.stop: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.socketConnect(Native Method) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.doConnect(PlainSocketImpl.java:295) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.connectToAddress(PlainSocketImpl.java:161) at java.net.PlainSocketImpl.connect(PlainSocketImpl.java:148) at java.net.Socket.connect(Socket.java:425) at java.net.Socket.connect(Socket.java:375) at java.net.Socket.<init>(Socket.java:290) at java.net.Socket.<init>(Socket.java:118) at org.apache.catalina.startup.Catalina.stop(Catalina.java:831) at org.apache.catalina.startup.Catalina.execute(Catalina.java:683) at org.apache.catalina.startup.Catalina.process(Catalina.java:179) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke0(Native Method) at sun.reflect.NativeMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(NativeMethodAccessorImpl. java:39) at sun.reflect.DelegatingMethodAccessorImpl.invoke(DelegatingMethodAcces sorImpl.java:25) at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:324) at org.apache.catalina.startup.Bootstrap.main(Bootstrap.java:243) This is how it is or something I need to do.
Hi I would not worry about it! It is Windows 98 so you have to learn to live with it. If you want a 'clean' startup and shutdown every time, you need to install another OS - Windows 2000 or XP (or LINUX) - witch Tomcat is 'designed' better for. With Win 2000/XP (and LINUX) it is also posible to run Tomcat as a Service. /Rene
