Entering a string without quotes

while i am not sure if this isthe correct board to post this message on I am using it as my application includes servlets and java beans.
I wish to write the string current_date to a mysql database but am unable to do so without the quotes being included which means the value does not default to current date but to 0000-00-00 -perhaps someone has suggestion
