The web.xml configuration for servlets includes the tag to control loading and initializing a servlet on startup:
You should download the servlet API from java.sun.com to study all aspects of servlet configuration.
Personally I like to have the init method log the fact that the servlet is initialized.

Why in the world did you title your post SOS??
Using an informative title would encourage responses and make the message sequence more useful to other users.
