The web.xml configuration for servlets includes the tag to control loading and initializing a servlet on startup: <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup> You should download the servlet API from java.sun.com to study all aspects of servlet configuration. Personally I like to have the init method log the fact that the servlet is initialized.
