Request.getRemoteUser() returns null in Tomcat 4.1.24.

I set up Tomcat to talk to Apache http server. Apache is configured to enforce user sign-on. With Tomcat 4.1.12 I could use Request.getRemoteUser() to retrieve the login user Id. When I replaced Tomcat 4.1.12 with 4.1.24, Request.getRemoteUser() always returns null. Why?
The box is an AS400 (now called iSeries).
Thanks for any help!
