Hi everyone, Can anyone recommend a decent host for my companies website? I am implementing a small content management system and would need access to a fair bit of database space (1 - 2G) (Oracle or SQL Server please) The company is quite small - less than 15 people and is based in a small town in scotland. I'm sure there must be some decent hosts out there but the only one I've looked at was talking about database access in the region of tens of megabytes which wont be enough. If I cant get a host, what can we do? We do have a fairly meaty server but we dont have broadband (its out of range ) and not a huge budget Any suggetsions greatfully received Simon
Get a dedicated server somewhere.... e.g. www.puretec.de offers dedicated servers for 29 EUR per month. Of course your would need to install the software then. But I think for a large database like yours it will best suite your needs.
Hi Simon, I don't know of any standard host that provides shared boxes which provide that amount of available database space. I would guess that you will need to go for a dedicated server hosted by an ISP. Have a look at this link for a list of ISPs who might be able to help.Servlets.com ISP List

Hi guys, Great thats a big help. Just one question though. With a dedicated server, how do you interact with it and install software? Is it through remote desktop or something similar? Thanks once again Simon

The best way could be to: Try to choose some of the service providers website, start reading their FAQ, if you were not answered, then email to their support, they will sure answer all of your questions, now you can commit to one of them. Hi Simon Typically if you have got a remote server then you will transfer files to it using FTP and possibly have access to the web-server management console to allow you to configure it and restart it (access will depend upon the Service Level Agreement). Typically you won't be granted full administration rights to the server even if it is a dedicated machine since it will still be running in the host's environment and they are likely to want to retain a level of control to prevent accidents/malicious damge.
