Oh, I almost forgot the shameless self promotion...
Javaranch also runs a Cattle Drive to help people learn to program. There is a cost, but it hardly counts considering the amount of help and feedback you get. Check it out anyway. Even if you don't sign up, it is worth doing the exercises.
It has received very good reviews from people who have completed it
