Please just help me sorting things .like how to start with it and what shud be necessary or good options that must be present in that project ..
Also please tell me what are '.war' files ?Are they also needed for this project ?

Welcome to Javaranch
First go thru servlets and JDBC tutorials at Sun at
http://java.sun.com/j2ee/tutorial/1_3-fcs/doc/Servlets.html
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/jdbc/basics/index.html
For testing servlets you need a servlet container. You can use Apache Tomcat for this.
You can download Apache Tomcat from:
http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/

Also please tell me what are '.war' files ?Are they also needed for this project ?

WAR files are Web ARchive files. These contains web modules. Considering that you are a beginner wars are not needed for your project.

"richa",
Welcome to the Ranch!
Can you please have a look at the JavaRanch naming policy here.
Your display name must be two words: your first name, a space, then your last name. Fictitious names are not allowed.
You can edit your profile here.
thanks,
Dave.

Heya, walk before you run. I believe Murthy was correct, you should have a look at JDBC and Servlets separately before you try to combine them. Very definitely.
We can't begin to address specifics of your project until we know where you are up to. Have you programmed any Java ever? How about SQL, HTML or JavaScript? What app server and database will you be using? What basic functionality do you need to provide?
Start with the 'what' (as you say) first, then worry about the 'how' second.
Dave.

As David pointed out, figure out what you want include in your online shopping project. Then learn the technologies needed and things like session management, shopping cart,e-payment ..etc.

Well thanks ..Actually I have already done some Java Programming as well as some JSP and JDBC.I also have done a lot in HTML,JavaScript. In this project I am planning to use Access at the back end providing the database facility and the server that I would be using would most likely be Apache Server.
But I thought I needed to know something about the project . I am not asking 'how ' right now ,but what I am aking is what are the basic functionalities needed for this particular project like session management ,e-payment etc etc .
And yes for sure I 'll update my profile .Thank you.

Online shopping applications usually need dynamic content. If you want develop your project using JSP/Servlets you should go for servlet container like Tomcat. If you want to go with php/perl ..etc you can do it with Apache itself. I suggest you to go with JSP&servlets instead of only servlets(In servlets you should write lot of println statements).
Coming to online shopping application, some of the features I would like to suggest you.
Basic Features:
Administration
Catalog browsing
Item searching
Shopping cart and order placement
Customer registration ,updating profiles. etc
Order status
some more features you can add later:
Session management
Personalization
Specialized pricing, discounts etc
Credit card authorization
Automatic Notifications of order status
