There was a post here last week, and I thought it was Gregg that had posted it asking for a good link to explain the elements of the web.xml.
Well anyway, In trying to respond to David Allen's post of session timing out, I found a cool link that explains theweb.xml really well
This page from Macromedia does a great job.

I relooked and it is part II of a three part series, so you have to hunt for the other two parts.
