For most purposes I recommend Lunarpages these days. A servlet/JSP account is $9.95/month (their "shuttle account at $7.95 with a $2 Java option), they run Resin (my favourite server) and MySQL, they allow you to deploy whole web applications as well as single JSPs and servlets, and they offer decent amounts of bandwidth, space, and other languages etc.
They don't make a big fuss about Java on their front page, but they do seem to know their stuff. Have a look, and let us know what you think.

Oh, and this is really more appropriate to the servlet forum, so I've moved it for you.

For UK based guys who may want to deal with a UK company, I came across a really good package at http://www.memset.com - I have not used them and therefore can not recommend them as such but the prices and packages are excellent.

Hmm. I quite like the idea of memset's "miniserver", although it is just a virtual server really. With the low-cost ones you only get 64MB of RAM, and have to share the CPU with 32 other sites, so I'm not so sure how appropriate it would be to a processing-and-database-intensive Java site.
If you are looking for a good deal in a proper dedicated server in the UK, I haven't found anything better than 1&1. They offer a whole machine with at least a 2GHz CPU and 256MB of RAM (and full root access!) all to yourself for an astonishing 29/month. I have one of their regular hosting accounts for my non-Java sites, and I'm very happy with their service. They actively encourage you to host as many domains as you want on a single account.

gives no mention of what host you are referring to...

I agree about memset miniservers but I am due to move two of my clients' php sites which from a shared host with positive costing them 500 a year for the two to now 180 odd quid on the top hosting pack at memset.
With 1&1, i did not like the idea of being *forced* into handing over your domain to them, which is what put me off their server. For a proper server, the best price for a high spec mahcine are at uk2.net (the specs are better than 1&1 but their websites are daunting and services only suitable for those who know what they are doing), here it is in any case: http://powerraq.com/ - if you signup for three years it costs 29 per month for: Pentium 4 - 2.4GHz 512MB RAM - 40GB Harddisk.

Thanks for the tip about uk2.net, I'd not come across them. I agree that their prices and spec are good for a know-what-you-are-doing root server. I think I'd be a bit put off by paying up front for 3 years to get the price, but that's probably because I don't have a business plan which will justify looking that far ahead at the moment.
Choosing between hosting providers is always tricky. If you don't need full root priveleges, I find the 1&1 "managed" option attractive, as it includes all the system admin for bugfixes and security updates and also a full daily backup service included in the price. I'd be very interested if you know of any other provider that offers this. Personally, I'm wary of taking on the responsibility for security updates and backups, after having a colocated server "hacked" last year. That incident ended up costing me nearly 2000 in excess bandwidth charges
As for domain services, most of my dealings with 1&1 so far have involved new domain registrations for specific projects rather than transferring domains from another registrar, so I've not found it much of a problem. I don't think their domain prices are unreasonable. Of course, I've not tried transferring any domains away from them, yet.
kgbinternet also looks interesting, provided you don't want to deploy many different web application "war" files. Their setup seems to require that each time you want to deploy a new web app you have to ask them to manually change their apache configuration. With Lunarpages it seems you are free to deploy any webapps you like, and the system will automatically pick them up.

The developer package which goes for aobut $13 US a month allows you to get your private Tomcat instance/JVM and deploy as many WARs as you want via tomcat manager. I have that package and have 2 different wars running. Performance has been very good.

Thanks to all for your input; lunarpages looks attractive for the simple needs that I have for now.

Just for interest, I've gathered some of the comments from this thread, added a bit more of my own research, and put together a page about java hosting on my "servletshop" site at http://www.servletshop.com/advice/hosts.html
All comments and suggestions welcome.
