Streaming media

I'm looking for a way to make Java stream video. There are two approaches:
1) Make Java actually stream it, as in spew bytes out over the net
2) Make Java control some other streaming server like Helix or Darwin Streaming Server
Does anybody have any suggestions on which one will work best, and/or how to do either one?
I read some docs about the JMF, but I was left confused as to whether it was a framework for viewing media, or streaming it, or both, or neither. Any comments on this would also be appreciated.
BTW: I really wasn't sure where to put this, admins please move it and tell me if there's a better place...
