Displaying Extended Unicode charsets in Html TEXTAREA

I am building a web-based Text editor. The editor must handle extended Unicode character sets. I have successfully prototyped an Applet but may end up preferring an HTML-based design owing to Applet/browser compatibility problems.
The extended character sets do not display correctly within an HTML TEXTAREA. As regular text on the HTML page they display perfectly.
Is it possible to display the unicode within an HTML textarea? What tweaking is required? I am using charset=utf-8, with a font called GentiumAlt.

I agree. Here's the link: http://aspose.com/file-tools
