Run Servlet in Tomcat

I am setting up environment to test
I created classes dir in root\web-inf to place my .java n .class file but still i m gettin 404 error (file not found) in IE . i know this is a common prob but right now i m not gettin it thru .. i checked with web.xml also .. please suggest something asap

Ideally it should work. If not enter the classes folder to the classpath (in restart tomcat. That should do it.

but where should i add the classes in catalina.bat ?
