Run Servlet in Tomcat

Hi,
I am setting up environment to test HelloServlet.java.
I created classes dir in root\web-inf to place my .java n .class file but still i m gettin 404 error (file not found) in IE . i know this is a common prob but right now i m not gettin it thru .. i checked with web.xml also .. please suggest something asap

Ideally it should work. If not enter the classes folder to the classpath (in catalina.sh/catalina.bat)and restart tomcat. That should do it.

but where should i add the classes in catalina.bat ?
