I want to install java web server on my machine.i could not understand what exactly to download from this website? http://jakarta.apache.org/tomcat/ can someone please help me?also, i have jdk1.2.1, will it work?which version is running these days and is there any free download for it? Please help me start.
Download the latest binary distribution for your operating system and follow the installation instructions (usually no more than unpacking the archive to where you want the installation folder to appear). You should really get the latest J2SDK (JDK) as well, which is 1.4.2_04 for most platforms (maybe another minor version for some. The latest Tomcat likely does not work on 1.2 JVMs and performance and stability have also increased dramatically.
Last Java version is 1.4.2 always best to have it up to date expecially if you are going to install the latest version of Tomcat. To get the Java version http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html and it is free... For Tomcat, depends on whether you have linux or windows easiest thing is to download/install the binaries http://jakarta.apache.org/site/binindex.cgi look for Tomcat 5 which is the latest version and download either the .exe (which I think autoinstalls in windows) or the .zip (windows) .tar.gz (linux) and then just unzip...
What I feel, you are looking actually for the tomcat webcontainer Go to:- http://jakarta.apache.org/site/binindex.cgi Now click on 5.0.19zip, which is below the heading TOMCAT 5.0.19. It will be downloaded in minutes. I think , you are using windows, so..just go with that download. It also has got the documentation of what to do next..and test the container you have downloaded. I hope , it'll help you.
I am going to close this thread. It should have been posted in the Tomcat/Apache forum. This forum is for Servlets questions. Since you have already gotten good responses from people here, I am going to close it rather than close and moving it. Thanks Mark
