My computer is configured to compile and run servlets using JSDK1.1.8. Now that I am using jdsk1.4 and would like to update to a new tool for compiling and running servlets ... after looking at sun's website, there are many ways to go about it.

I already have Java Web Start 1.2 on my computer, how do I reference the necessary jar files to compile java code with servlet methods?

I never used Java webstart, so I can't give you any advice about on how getting on with this tool. I'm using Tomcat to run web applications (so servlets and JSP's, which will be translated into servlets before being used). For compilation I use eclipse, which is a free IDE downloadable at eclipse.org. In fact, my whole java environment is free, since I use java in my own time, not during my working hours.
You should find a lot of documentation on the internet about bot Tomcat and eclipse.
