Servlet 2.3 API question

I'm using Tomcat for my application and I need to get the original server response as a String so that I may compress it. Is there any method in the Servlet 2.3 API that will allow me to do that? For example, I create an output stream by servletResponse.getOutputStream(). How would I create an input stream with the servletResponse so that I can read from it?
Thanks!

This sounds more like a Servlet question than a J2ME question, so I will move it there...

A google search for "servlet zip filter" found
this article on Zip filters for servlets.
Filters are designed for this sort of thing.
