Java Programming on Linux" - Meyers (good if you like Linux)
"Teach Yourself Java 2 Platform" - Lemay & Cadenhead (good examples to work through)
"Computing Concepts With Java 2 Essentials" - Cay Horstman (school text... not recommended because it is too basic)

Read/used the Dietel & Dietel book in a class I took at school. I was not impressed with it. A lot of emphasis on swing some of the examples I think were not well explained. Also got the O'Reilly in a nutshell book, it is great, not a book to learn from but great to use as a reference. I need to go out an get a new book for reference and that I can use for examples and the basics - I'm leaning towards the just java book, but wanted to wait and see if they are coming out with a new edition in the near future.
