What is the difference between Web server and Application server?

1) Web server runs over the web, app server does not.

Web Server serves Servlets, JSP, HTML, etc, it also runs Plain Old Java classes called from Servlets and JSP

App Server runs EJBs, handles transactions, security, etc.

A Web Server can call an App Server but it cannot run an EJB without one.

Basic differences, but what does this question have to do with Oracle?

I guess it could have to do with the Oracle Application Server. But I think it is a more generic question and am moving it to servlets.

Plus this is a duplicate post. There are two identical posts that you created in the EJB forum.

Please refrain from cross-posting and duplicate postings in the future.
