I connect to the internet via ATT broadband cable. I'm also running Unix with an apache server and tomcat server. I've been building a website, and I want to know if I can host it on my own computer using my domain name instead of the ip address that ATT gave me? If not, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I use a dynamic DNS redirection service(for free) it is called yi.org and you can put anything you want in front of it(mine is http://javaguy.yi.org ) not quite http://www.javaguy.com but close. I connect by dialup and run a program that logs on my new isp address on their server every ten minutes(you would only have to log on once a month cause you have static address). Unfortunately they arent taking new users last i looked. when i found it there was another free one too. try searching google for free DNS.
hope that helps
PS: I'm the real javaguy and my site was around before his and his doesnt have anything to do with java
Unfortunately I have a dial-up connection and need my phone lately so my site is down a lot. Check it out if you can.

Thanks for your help Randall. You really got me pointed in the right direction. I tried to check out your site, but it was down. You must be on the phone. I'll try again later.

It is frustrating. I need to keep the phone free but I want my site online. I really need cable or DSL but being unemployed....
Im going to run it in the evenings though. After 5:30 PM pacific
for about 8 hrs and on weekends. In one week I have to cancel AOL and go to a free ISP. Last time I used it they were constantly trying to disconnect me. Oh well I'll get a job soon. If you are into servlets you will like it. I make the source code available.

Hey Randall,

according to my terms of service, I'm not supposed to host a server(I already do). What are the chances someone could find out about it using these dns redirecting techniques?

I wouldnt worry about it. I would just do it. I'm sure AOL and earthlink had similar clauses in their agreement which i violated. btw im having problems with windows on my pc(and my monitor is about to die) so if you want to see the source code of my servlets try http://www.angelfire.com/games2/programming
and click link at bottom of the page. it is the old source code from my apache site

as far as I know they all say dont run a server, and there is no way they can know you do.
