I am puzzled by something. I see lot of activity on the Swing forum here. People seem to be discussing swing as if they were actually using it. But I have never seen anyone actually use swing. Since java has settled down as a server side scripting language what is the relevence of swing ? Look I am not baiting you guys I am genuinely curious, so you can post an answer without fear .

At TriZetto, where I work, we create software for entering, repricing, and routing health care claims. The whole user interface is all created using Swing.

Why do we need graphical interfaces at all? Swing is an API used to create GUIs. If your program does not need one, then you don't need swing. If you need a user interface, then you have a library for the purpose.
But I have never seen anyone actually use swing.
Look harder.

Is this on an internet or intranet environment ? If it is on the internet could you post the url , I would like to see it.
David,
It is proof that matters. Isn't it so easy to shut me up by posting a URL to some page that has a swing application which does something useful? So why doesnt anybody do it ?
Cheers

Frog,
I thought i wud make him swing along with me on the trees and see the world.
Have a second thought before inviting him. I guess
he will not fit with his ideas even in your community.

Our clients run the software on their intranet. I looked but didn't see any screenshots of our applications on the web page. Just imagine a whole bunch of swing components arranged in a lot of different ways. It looks pretty much like you'd expect it to!

I don't know much about commercial applications using it (I don't pay for things I can get for free), but here are a few open source links:

I did not see any swing applets at any of these urls. I can post one
http://web2.java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/start/HelloSwingApplet.html
but it does not do anything useful beyond telling me "you are successfully running a Swing applet" .

Re frogs. Considering the fact that Jean Paul Sartre , Albert Camus and Charles Baudelaire were all frogs I am deeply flattered by the comparison .

Well Sahir, you did ask for applications, not applets. So David provided examples of applications. As for applets - I don't know of any Swing applets offhand; I suspect there aren't many out there. Perhaps now that you've clarified (i.e. changed) your question , someone else will have a link for you. But I think the answer to your original question is that most of the people using swing are creating applications rather than applets. Applets in general don't seem to be used that much nowadays, and swing applets even less. But I don't pay much attention to that area of Java myself, so more informed opinions would be appreciated...

I agree to that. In my prev. office we were developing eCRM tool, and the whole GUI was heavy swing applets. Though they are designed with small & fast intranet setups in mind. It was defenitly not for internet.
New office where I joined recently is also using Swing, to build a finacial application. In fact they are replacing the Oracle/VB forms GUI with Swing Frames and backend to J2EE. My Point is swing is being used rather heavily here also.
Sorry, I cant use my name for some reasons now. I request Ranchers to excuse me for this time.

Poof!! Nope, my magic wand is STILL broken.
Sorry, the froggies will just have to stay froggies. But thats OK, I LIKE froggies.
BTW, we use Swing in some stand alone applications and some intranet applications, but no internet uses.

The company I work for (KPMG Consulting) uses a swing applet to enter their hours and expenses, but you'll have to take my word for it. Can't send it to you, can't send you to an URL...you can only get to the URL though a Virtual Private Network.

I really like Swing and although I've not done any for a little while, I've been involved with a handful of fairly large Swing applications. They were built for clients to use internally on their desktops (i.e. across their intranet) which is probably why we see fewer examples on the internet.
As for examples of Swing applications, check out Together by TogetherSoft (www.togethersoft.com).

Thanks. Its good to see some one using swing in an environment where the presence of the appropriate plug-in is not guaranteed. I got to find out if they have some way of dealing with this problem, perhaps I can use the same method too.
Now that the url has been posted, I shall hold my peace (at least on the subject of swing ).

If you are worried about a particular version of Java then use the plug-in.

Just speculating. If you put the swing classes in the codebase path on the server you should be able to swing it ? If my memory serves me right there is a readymade file wih the swing classses called swing.jar which you can download from sun ?
