Deploy servlet question

Standard way is to put them in servlet folder under WEB-INF etc and do URL mapping to call them. My question is can I copy servlet in webapps direct and call them with real name with http w/o naming them in web.xml like we do jsp pages.

If you're using Tomcat, you can uncomment the invoker servlet and call it with
http://localhost:8080/servlet/<package>.<servlet-class-name>.
