Listener confusion!!

I am learning the Servlets in Head First Servlets and JSP Book. I am finding diffculty in understanding the listener topics(such as ServletContextListener, HttpSessionListener.....).

This book explains everything very clearly by pictorial representation and I understood very well all the topics expect the listener section. I am just wondering even if I can't understand the concepts in this book, whether this topics can be learnt from some other material or free on-line tutorial.

However, If anyone knows the good tutorial for beginners will be very useful. And also just give a brief introduction to why we are using listener interfaces in servlets and its uses?

The following article may help:

Essentially, servlet listeners enable objects that implement these listener interfaces to be notified when events of interest occur within the web container.

For example, the HttpSessionListener enables monitoring of changes to active sessions within a web application.
