intercepting URL before it gets to Servlet

Is there a way to intercept and change a URL before it gets to Servlet? I want to make changes to it before Tomcat maps it to Context/Servlet.

URL rewriting sounds like the right thing, but all resources only talk about tracking sessions using it.

Should I use a filter? It seems there are no methods for changing the request URL... Any info is appreciated. Please help.

Closing this since you address the same issue in this topic. Please do not cross-post the same question more than once. It wastes people's time when multiple redundant conversations take place.
