I noticed something about servlets in general: For example, when I'm
on a servlet page and I do a refresh in (F5/Ctrl-R) I get the annoying POSTDATA warning message (if you click ok it'll resubmit, blah blah blah). Why
is that? How can one avoid it?

It's apparent you haven't read the latest issue of the JavaRanch Journal, have you?

In this article I talk about the PRG Technique which addresses your issue.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
