Here's a pretty good description of how Servlets fit into an MVC/J2EE architecture:

Here's a couple of good tutorials that show how to create a Servlet, Forward to a JSP, and even test and run your code. Might be a little WebSphere/IRAD specific, but the code is all there and valid.
