Returning an html screen before initiating another process,

I am trying to kick-off a process from a web page. I want the browser to immediately return a screen that says the process has been initiated. I don't want it to have to wait for the process to end before returning a screen to the user. So how do I do this? When the user clicks the submit button, a void method is called in my servlet. I set up my return html file name and try to flush that back to the browser. Then I call a separate class to begin my process. Obviously this isn't working as I thought it would. Instead of returning the html screen immediately, it sits there and waits for the process to end. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks, Donna

See this example (long running process) graciously provided by Ben Souther.
