...
where my .class file placed in
C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 4.1\webapps\J2EE\WEB-INF\classes\usingjsp\HelloWorldServlet
...

Just to be clear.
Is your class file in a directory named HelloWorldServlet or did you mean to say
C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 4.1\webapps\J2EE\WEB-INF\classes\usingjsp\HelloWorldServlet.class
?

What you've got looks good.
If there is a problem, it's not jumping out at me.

Dumb question, are you sure your container is running?
Are you seeing a container generated message or the 'Friendly Error Message' generated by your browser?

Have you looked at your container's logs to see if any exceptions are being thrown?

the problem was that i didn't close the <url-pattern>.
but when fixed that problem and run the application it gave me another error

HTTP Status 500 -

type Exception report

description The server encountered an internal error () that prevented it from fulfilling this request.

This usually happens when you compile your classes with a new version of Java than what the container is using.

For instance, if you compiled your servlet with javac 1.6 but tried to run it in an instance of of Tomcat running under Java 1.5 you would see this.

Either upgrade the version under which Tomcat is running, compile under the same version used by Tomcat or use the 'source' attribute when compiling to let the JRE know that this class is OK to run in that particular version.

javac -source 1.5 MyServlet.java
