That depends on the server you use. E.g., with Tomcat you can drop war files into the TOMCAT_HOME/webapps folder, and it will be expanded and put into service. You can also upload it through the manager web app (which is generally running at http://localhost:8080/manager/html) Consult the server documentation if you're using a different server.

Ear files aren't used with servlet containers; they're used with JEE containers (like GlassFish), most often if you're using EJBs.
