power of persistence in servlet

can any tell me what power of persistence in servlet means and can anyone explain me this with a example

It is not a generally meaningful term.

I did a google search for the term and came across an example that showed using an instance variable in a servlet to persist a value across all threads. This is not a generally accepted practice.
