how do i get the response after hitting a url

Hi..
I have a java file where i construct a few parameters like name,age etc and append it to a location which has a pdf file and now in that pdf these parameters will be mapped to the respective fields and the pdf will be generated.Now my question is in case there were some errors in the server because of which the document was not printed how do i find out the error from the response and handle it accordingly....
