JIT stands form Just-in-time compiler. It is used to compile Java files directly into a platform specific executable file. In this way, while adhering to the Java Virtual Machine Specification for compiling the Java file, it rapily increases the speed/performance of the Java applications.

If I understand correcltly a JIT dynamically recompiles the java bytecode into machine code on the fly so that the java application/applet will run faster.
