When I call 911, and ask if I could be a police officer, and I don't want their money, but just give me something to do, they tell me that I can only volunteer for charity but not as a law-enforcement officer. Oh no! What may I supposing to do???
Some police departments have a Police Auxillary. They are volunteers who work with the police department. Generally they are used for traffic control, but also depending on the department they may assist with other things such as fingerprinting, or community relations. They do not in my experience carry weapons, nor do they have arrest powers. Your best bet for more specific information is to call your local police department (not 911) and simply ask if they have an auxillary program. As Cindy suggested, your area may also have volunteer fire departments. Volunteer firefighters/emts usually do the exact same things as paid firefighters, and receive the same training, although of course they generally aren't paid. To locate one of those just open up the phone book (usually in the blue pages under public safety or fire/rescue) and start dialing.
Unfortunately, it doesn't matter. The Tick got laid off this week. (Maybe Wasabe King can join him at the diner? Sounds like it could be the basis of an episode, actually...) [ January 15, 2002: Message edited by: Jim Yingst ]
You called 911 and asked if you could be a police officer...? You're lucky you didn't get a fine for calling 911 without an emergency. Don't want to be rude but...get a clue.
