Like you, I too am a novice Java programmer. This site is provides a handy means to communicate with others about your Java problems/concerns/questions...and to also help those of us who just don't know much.
I've been working the Java College series of problems. These are available in the "Cattle Drive." They're helpful to the novice Java Programmer, but I must admit that they are pretty limited in scope. I'd like to see more focus on the concepts of OOP, but that's another story in itself. You will find a series of 8 programs. Start with the first problem and attempt to write a Java program to accomplish the assignment.
But I would be remiss if I failed to tell you the importance of complying FULLY with the coding standards set forth in the JavaRanch style guide. The Style Guide is available in the "Chicken Coop." (Who makes up these names?!) I strongly suggest you print out the guide and read it over several times. (Hint: watch the spacing!)
After you write your code and are convinced you have the ideal program, submit it by email to
nitpicker@javaranch.com
You'll soon receive an return email telling you the problems with the code. And you'll immediately realize the reason for the name in the email address! Don't let the nitpicking frustrate you. I've come to realize that although the nitpicking gets pretty petty, it does have sound basis, so I just learned to comply with the Style Guide.
If you have problems with the programming, post questions right here at the Cattle Drive. You'll get answers...sometimes more than you need!
I also find reading posted topics in both the "Java In General--Beginner" and the "Cattle Drive" helps me evaluate my understanding to the language and it allows me to realize where I need to focus more study time.
One more point. The "keepers" of the JavaRanch have a set of rules they expect participants to abide by...such as treating fellow JavaRanch participants with respect (avoid flaming responses) and asking that you register under your full name. I forget where these rules are posted...someone is bound to follow my posting with a guide to that part of the JavaRanch. I've been most appreciative of the keepers of the site (the "sheriffs" and others) for intervening when the rules are violated.
So, there you have it in 25 words or more--a not-so-quick synopsis of the JavaRanch by one of the newer members of the Ranch.
Good luck to you and I hope you find it as helpful has I have!

Mandar R,

Please read this page and register properly. Thank you.

Java college assignments begin with the main Cattle Drive page. Follow the links from there.

Are there any plans to add more assignments to the Cattle Drive?
I have found them very useful and more assignments would of course be even more helpful. Maybe a couple on collections would be easy to arrange?
Is there a reason why the Cattle Drive is so limited?

As luck should have it, I have a new page on OO almost completed. Stay tuned here for details.

Hi,
I'm also new to Java and the Java Ranch, and I'm going to give the Cattle Drive a try. The site is to be the best executed Java community site I've come across in my brief relationship with Java.
Anyway I'm posting here to say Hi and thanks for having me. I'm sure you'll be seeing some questions from me soon.
Cheers
Matt
