Cleaning Laptop monitors

What is a safe way to clean a laptop monitor?
I have a Compaq Armada E500 and I've only ever wiped it with a dry tissue. The grime has been slowly building up over he past year and a bit and I'd like to wipe it properly, but I'm paranoid.
Suggestions?

scrub your monitor with an SOS pad and some battery acid.
If you go to an electronics store such as RadioShack, they have cleaning solutions "engineered" for such purposes. By engineered I mean they take some cheap household cleaner that has been tested and works on laptops, change the label to "laptop cleaner" and charge you 10 times the price .
What that household product is, I don't know, so I just suck it back and pay up!
