In formal logic, we would say the statement "No pain no gain" contains no truth-value whatsoever. It is vague, ambiguous, and context-dependent in its expression;, since resolution of the qualities in a statement is prerequisite to, and not part of, formal logic, it cannot hold true in any event.

Although vague, its reflective of a basic truth of the universe that effort (often painful) is usually needed to improve just about anything in life. For those who think/wish that things will magically get better or think that get rich schemes work, its a helpful reminder.
