You dress up as strange creatures or characters and go around getting candy?

Maybe they're all out partying to celebrate Purim? Except for a few drudgy stay-at-home types, of course.

Purim is a big deal in my mom-in-law's neighborhood.
Purim is the festive celebration of the fact that the Jews were not eradicated by Haman in Shushan a long time ago. The story of purim is from the scroll of esther, or the magilah. It is one of the few times when jews are encouraged to get very drunk. There's a category devoted to it at google.
