consumed() sets the event so that it will not be sent back to a peer component for handled. It's rendered protected so that other awt Components can be checked by other Compoenents for event propagation.

Using the consume() method is a great way to get rid of the annoying default behaviour in JTables. Normally, when you press enter in a JTable, the next row becomes selected. To prevent this, add a key listener to the JTable, look for the enter key, and consume the key event. I know you're probably not having problems with JTables, but this is one of my pet peeves.
