None that will last even a year without some starting capital.

I started a shop with my mother with about $3,000.00 and it lasted 9 years.
We never earned more than a (small) salary each and couldn't seem to get enough money to buy new stock to expand our business therefore making the business grow.
And it was HARD work.
Work for someone else it's easier and the money comes in each week without too much worry.
Otherwise try making bead jewelry (bracelets etc) and sell them at community markets. This seems to be easy and the outlay is minimal. Bead suppliers are everywhere these days tho wholesale is cheaper.

I agree. It's easy. but it could happen that all of a sudden you get your payment together with a letter saying that you are fired. And what happens if you've worked for 20 years with the same company? It'd be really hard (if not impossible) to get a job again.
I'm just finishing my degree. But i'm thinking that i'd rather get a short amount of money doing what I like, even knowing that it's gonna be harder. I wouldn't like to be scared every year thinking that my contract is gonna expire. But the best thing is that you are working for yourself, not for someone else and you are controlling all your time.
let's wait for our future

You can use your Java knowledge, write a shareware program and sell it, don't need any capital, have a look the following newsgroup, all of those people are doing that!

or search google group comp software shareware authors

I want a flower shop. I always imagine having my own business and not touching a computer, but, then I start thinking...perhaps I can sell flowers online...maybe I can have an interactive catalogue of bouquets...a weekly newsletter on Cool Flower News...
Flower shop, maybe not.

Angela,
Just think about the things that you're good at and, more importantly, what you enjoy doing. My guess, since you're posting at JavaRanch, is that you're good at and enjoy writing software. The next step would be to try to identify a business problem or need that people would pay for to resolve. Once you've identified a need, see if you can satisfy that need. If you can, you've just created a business.
I think the concept of starting a business would be a lot easier if you knew right away what you wanted to do, besides starting a business.
