database(?) and stuff

I have to make an application that will access more than 5 text files.
1. It will get data from File1.txt
2. It will use the first entry from File1.txt and use it for processing in File2.txt.
3. It will check if the data from File3.txt is updated with that from File2.txt. If not, it will update File3.txt.
File1.txt has to be sorted to eliminate duplicate entries.
I am confused about what to study for this one. Whether it be JDBC or just use the java.text package. Please help...

All you really need for this assignment is the java.io package.
